Northern Ireland has two new ballroom dancing champions. Russell and Claire Johnson, representing NI Dancesport, have officially claimed 1st place in the prestigious Dance Promoter’s Association (DPA) National League as Champions for Adult Beginners Ballroom dancing.
The thrilling announcement was made at the end of July 2026 at the DPA Blackpool District Festival in Bournemouth. This victory marks a spectacular milestone for the couple, capping off a competitive season filled with hard work, grace, and determination.
A Phenomenal Debut Season for DPA National League Champions
What makes this National League title truly extraordinary is that 2025/2026 was Russell and Claire’s very first year of competitive ballroom dancing. Stepping onto the competitive circuit for the first time can be daunting for any dancer. To navigate the pressure, master the technique, and maintain the consistency required to top a national league over an entire season is nothing short of incredible.
Their rapid rise is a testament to their dedication, hours of practice, and the top-tier coaching and support from the team at NI Dancesport.
Dominating the Novice Circuit
In addition to their league triumph, July 2026 proved to be a golden month for the duo on the dance floor. Russell and Claire stepped up to enter two Novice ballroom competitions.
Proving that their league position was no fluke, they danced their way through the rounds and into the finals. Competing against a fierce field of six talented couples in the finals, Russell and Claire captured 1st place in both competitions.
Moving Up: The Next Chapter
Success brings new challenges. Due to their dominant winning streak and high point accumulation, Russell and Claire have officially triggered their promotion.
Starting in September 2026, the couple will leave the Beginner and Novice Ballroom categories behind to compete in Intermediate Ballroom. This step up will see them face tougher choreography, stiffer competition, and higher technical standards. However, if their first year is any indication of their potential, they are more than ready for the challenge.
Congratulations to Russell, Claire, and everyone at NI Dancesport on this magnificent achievement. The local dancing community will be watching and cheering you on as you take the Intermediate field by storm this autumn!
